character.
CHARACTER NAME: Shadow
SERIES: Final Fantasy VI, herp and derp.
CANON POINT: Before going to Kefka's Tower
AGE: Unknown, but presumably mid-30s.
APPEARANCE: Shadow almost always is dressed in his ninja garb; it is said that no one alive has ever seen his face. However, underneath his garb there is a man with short brown hair, though the details beyond that are limited because we only see him without his mask in sprite form. However, most fan artwork depicts him as a stern-faced man with messy brown hair. He is incredibly muscular; not huge like a body builder, but it is very clear that he is strong and swift. He stands at a height of 5'10". His ninja garb is mostly black, though there are a few colorful scarves and belts here and there, typical of Yoshitaka Amano's designs. He is almost never without his garb.

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A

PERSONALITY: Shadow is a cold man to most people, caring only about his jobs and the money he will receive. Actually, he is cold to all, acknowledging no one as a friend, not even his own daughter. While it is never stated that Shadow recognizes Relm as his daughter, he likely does, due to her location, and Interceptor's friendliness toward her. Is it because he feels guilt? He likely does, but at the same time, he states a very crucial line that alludes to his state of being: "There are those who have killed their emotions. Remember that."

Shadow is of course referencing himself, killing his own emotions to escape his guilt over Baram. While it is never known what happened to Relm's mother, he likely left her shortly after Relm's birth due to this guilt. He couldn't stop running away from the pain and the guilt. He was always on the move, being hired for various tasks, notorious for being willing to "kill his own best friend for the right price." (Ironically, his inability to kill his best friend was what led to this persona in the first place.) Or, "slit his mama's throat for a nickel." He will kill without a second thought, possibly as atonement for being unable to kill Baram.

However, after the Empire hires him and attempts to dispose of him after the job is done, there is a change in his attitude. Before, he would kill anyone, help anyone, if the price called for it, but his eyes were opened to the malice of the Empire, and when he helps out the Returners on the Floating Continent, he feels he cannot return with them to the airship, having "no right" after helping the Empire.

He realizes that the Returners are fighting for the right cause, for the best of the world, and helps them out when they find him in the World of Ruin, that is, after they convince him to join with a new weapon. Of course, his money-seeking attitude is never going to go away. He was always a robber, even before his guilt of leaving Baram, and will always look for ways to make money. However, as he states at the end of the game, he has found friends. Or at least, the closest things to friends.

While he is still fairly cold to everyone (except his dog, Interceptor), he develops a kinship with the Returners and fights with them. The most emotion he ever shows is toward Terra, overhearing her lament to General Leo about worrying about never finding love. Desperately, she looks to Shadow for an answer, and he at first states he has nothing to offer, but then he tells the line about killing his emotions. Granted, this isn't a lot in terms of opening himself up, but it's more than he shows anyone else, save for Relm, his daughter. He saves Relm from a burning building, only claiming that he was trying to save his dog, since he had run after her. However, it's very likely that at the last minute, he realized his daughter would perish. (After all, it is implied that the Returners probably would have died in that building if Shadow hadn't come at the last second.) He never acknowledges Relm as his daughter, unfortunately, but this is probably due to his own inner demons telling him he could not be a good father. It's likely he trusts Strago to take good care of her.

Developing a deep relationship with anyone will take a lot of time and healing on his part. He will have to overcome his own personal dilemma with Baram.

ABILITIES: Shadow is an accomplished ninja. While he dresses as a stereotypical black-clad Ninja (ninjas in real life Japan actually did not dress like that) with many Amano colors and frills, he is able to sneak around and kill his unsuspecting victims. He wields knives, his most powerful weapon being the Oborozuki. He is capable of throwing items and weapons at enemies - any weapon can be thrown at enemies, as well as elemental scrolls and shurikens.

Due to him using magicite with the Returners, he is capable of casting several different spells. He knows a fair amount of them, such as cure spells and the basic elemental spells, and perhaps a higher-level one like Flare. He relies mainly on his weapons, though.

Also, his dog Interceptor can show up and do heavy damage to enemies by ripping them to shreds with his fangs.

POSSESSIONS: Shadow possesses his top-level knife, the Oborozuki. He also possesses his ninja garb and will show up wearing it. In addition, he has 20 pinwheels (throwing stars), and 5 each of flame scrolls, water scrolls, lightning scrolls, invisibility scrolls, and shadow scrolls. And perhaps most importantly, he will be accompanied by his dog, Interceptor.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:

[The video opens to the image of a man completely clothed in black. He wears a ninja hood adorned with a few colors and a small opening for his menacing eyes.

The voice comes out low and emotionless.]

I seek a way to make money.

[It's all he can say at the moment. Best not advertise himself as an assassin out in the open like this.

It's a very brief message, though, and the feed clicks off after he delivers it.]

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:

The black sky had only been illuminated by the light from a waning crescent moon. The stars were there; hardly visible, though, after the practical nuclear winter from Kefka's Light of Judgment. Destruction everywhere. Death. Shadow was able to slip through the dark night unseen; his black outfit concealed him, leaving everything except those cold eyes to the imagination.

He was alone, weaponless and broke. He might as well have been dead. He should have been dead after what happened on the Floating Continent. That might have been a better fate, had Terra and the others not waited for him. Now he would have to keep running. Running forever. What did he have to sustain him now? He was still recovering from his injuries from that Light of Judgment. The fall from the airship had hurt, and while his bones had healed, he was still weak. All he could do now was survive.

Were there any trains left? He once had the skill to rob them, but even if there were any left... He required a partner. He had no one. Nothing. The one thing he was thankful for was Interceptor, who had fortunately survived the Light of Judgment as well. Interceptor had hunted for him, had kept him company... Any shred of emotion he had left was directed toward his loyal companion.
